Online Portfolio for Randal Owen Hutchinson
I am a 33 year old artist from the Northwestern part of the United States. I use photography and photographs as well as a background in printmaking to meld images that commemorate memory, place and ideal or a blend in all things... I enjoy what I do and feel that a piece is most successfull when an artist can convey a sense of place, emotion, or urge by their work, and to be quite frank, " it's what I strive for most in my work"(to quote myself).
Witnessing a changing landscape in a severe manner here in Seattle and thinking of my past travels, I tend to focus on the notion of "sacred". What is "sacred"? To me, "sacred" means anything held close to heart; a place where strong memories are formed, a scent (perhaps of a loved one), a revelation- and frequently a place where these occur.. or an awareness of history or tradition.
In my experience many of these "sacred locations" are being demolised here in Seattle to make more room for a population that the city is not yet capable of accomodating. These momentos or landmarks of the present which span into yesteryear are bulldozed to create stale condiminiums. Their concrete floors and exposed ventiliation and crap know not the brick walls and claw foot bathtubs that were demolished to make room for their efficient, y2k compliant, clean and modern interiors. They know only the theory of minimizing overheads and maximizing profits. History will be replaced with Westward Expansion, "go west young man and get what is yours". Well this is about as far west as one can get while still being in the West. Here we will replace our historic landmarks so that landbarons can maximize their square footage. Come on over get it while the gettin's hot!!!!!!!!!!!!
